TITAN Cement conference in Greece

Keeping close to the needs of his customers is a key point for UTP. Close connections allow us to listen to the customer’s daily problems and to find solutions to their specific applications.

The TITAN – UTP Cement conference took place in Greece on the 30th of September and 1st of October 2008, in the very modern cement plant in Thessaloniki. Due to the production processes and the properties of the materials used for making cement, all equipments are subjected to various wear phenomena such as abrasion, impact, adhesion and corrosion. Welding consumables for high temperature alloys, stainless steels and of course welding consumables for hardfacing are frequently used in the cement industry.

Among the participants from TITAN, several plants were represented: Thessaloniki, Kamari and Patras from Greece, Cementarnica USJE from FYROM. Project managers from TITAN headquarters in Athens also attended the conference.

The first day was dedicated to various presentations describing the wear principles and welding of cast iron. This was followed by a practical demonstration. Welding demonstrations were carried out by the experienced Mr Makakas. At the same time, Mr Assion gave his support for technical advises, with additional details concerning the applications, the recommended electrode holding position, the arc length and other useful information for the welders and the person in charge of the welding procedures.

This was also an opportunity to promote our services for hardfacing rollers and tables of vertical mills and high pressure roller presses, in collaboration with our new UTP service partner IBERMAROS from Portugal. IBERMAROS is specialised in welding services on site. By developing such collaboration with service companies, UTP offer a wider range of products and services, and strengthen his position as a global partner.

During the second day, (concrete/ typical) selected examples of repair and maintenance were shown with explanations concerning the recommended UTP welding consumables and procedures. A plant tour was organised in order to identify some specific cases and to find a solution. The conference ended with more practical demonstration and an open discussion including topics like joining of dissimilar steels and hardfacing for different service temperatures.

This seminar was a great opportunity to share our experience in the cement industry with the representatives of TITAN, to discuss some typical cases but also new applications.

Indeed, we would like to thank again TITAN for welcoming UTP and the Böhler Welding Group representatives from Greece, and especially the TITAN team from Thessaloniki for the great organisation.
